Biaui has 10 confirmed cases of monkeypox, also known as “monkeypox” or “rodent pox.” The information is from the State Department of Health’s Epidemiological Bulletin (SESABI), with updated data as of Sunday. (25).
Still in the state, other cases of the virus have been identified in patients between the ages of 30 and 40.
Of the 10 patients already confirmed in Piaui, only one woman developed the disease.
Most of the diagnosed patients were identified in the region known as “Entre Ríos”, that is, the region that includes the capital, Teresina. At the site, 38 cases are still under investigation, eight cases have been confirmed and 26 cases have been ignored.
Here is a breakdown of cases by city:
- Barneba (1)
- Teresina (8)
- Battle (1)
Across the state, there are still 63 suspected cases, and 54 have already been disposed of as monkeypox patients.
SESAPI trains its teams to diagnose disease
The Minister of Health, Neris Jr, explained that the state remains on alert to identify and isolate new cases. Sesapi is preparing, mainly in order to identify the virus, in order to avoid an exacerbation of the disease in Piauí.
To this end, the Secretariat has been training municipal primary care system teams inland so that they can perform a “differential diagnosis” of monkeypox. That is, differentiating between the virus and other diseases that have similar symptoms and can be confused with the new smallpox. Examples include herpes rash, primary or secondary syphilis, or allergic skin reactions.
“We are training our teams so that they can do that, essentially differential diagnosis, what is monkeypox, which is now called rodentpox, and we are giving this guidance, around material collection, monitoring of suspected patients, and isolation, until the case is confirmed,” the director explained.

Health Minister Neris Jr
For Neres Jr., the state government has been prepared for the disease since the first confirmed case. In the Secretary’s assessment, the best way to combat the disease, for now, is to provide the population with information about this new virus.
“We were hoping we didn’t have any numbers [de caso confirmado]Which is ideal, but from the first case onwards, the state health department has already been on the alert, both for confirmed cases and suspected cases, and is always providing guidance,” he added.
Symptoms and diagnosis
According to information issued by the Ministry of Health, the symptoms of new smallpox generally include signs and symptoms such as: a rash or skin lesions, swelling, fever, body aches, headache, chills and weakness.
A person, of any age, with a sudden onset of mucosal damage and a single or multiple acute, deep and well-defined skin eruption anywhere on the body is considered a suspected case.
The case can only be confirmed after a ‘positive/detectable’ laboratory result of monkeypox by molecular diagnosis (real-time polymerase chain reaction and/or sequencing).
