Another type of coronavirus, the one that causes COVID-19, has been discovered and is already spreading around the world. BA.2.86 was identified at the end of July in Denmark, and according to an official from the World Health Organization (WHO), it is already present in South Africa, Switzerland, the United States, Israel and the United Kingdom. New version of covid
Like Iris, which has already arrived in Brazil, the variant BA.2.86 is also a mutation of Ômicron.
according to ReutersIt was first detected on July 24 in Denmark in a high-risk patient. Later, it was identified in other symptomatic patients in routine procedures at airports and in water samples in some countries.
The cases were not connected, which indicates that the mutation is circulating.
What is the risk of the alternative
- According to Maria van Kerkhove, technical lead for COVID-19 at the World Health Organization, the number of cases of BA.2.86 remains low.
- Although the variable is being monitored, and scientists do not believe that it will cause a new wave of deaths, serious cases, and hospitalizations, they warned of the need to take the risk seriously, as well as monitor it.
- Health officials are still researching how effective vaccines are against the mutation, as the vaccines are better at preventing deaths and severe cases from reinfection.
- Experts are also evaluating whether existing tests and medications work against BA.2.86.
It’s in Brazil?
The variant BA.2.86 has not yet arrived in Brazil.
Experts in the field stress the importance of vaccination and monitoring measures, such as washing hands and keeping the environment ventilated.
Another type of coronavirus has already arrived in Brazil
- The EG.5.1 variant, nicknamed Eris, is another sub-variant of Omicron, which is currently the most widespread strain worldwide.
- Symptoms are similar to those of Ômicron: fever, headache, body aches, sore throat, and runny nose.
- However, the vaccine is also the main method of protection against mutation.
- It was first identified in early July by the UK’s Health Safety Agency after it had already been reported in Asia. The United States, the United Kingdom, Thailand and India are some of the countries that have already recorded cases.
- The latest WHO update indicates that the EG.5 mutation, including the EG.5.1 strain, is a “monitor variant”. However, the agency has not yet indicated its concern.
