Parkour is approved by Alesp and becomes state law

The Sao Paulo State Legislative Assembly in an extraordinary session, held on August 8, approved Bill No. 673/2021 – written by state deputy Sebastião Santos (Republican) – regulating the practice of the sport known as “parkour”.

According to excerpts from the project, parkour aims at activities that use physical skills and abilities to overcome obstacles and challenges in natural or urban environments, and can be developed individually or collectively. Parkour practitioners, after being sanctioned by the state government, began receiving “athletes” designations.

“Parkour, also known as the art of displacement, is a physical practice that involves overcoming obstacles through jumping, running, climbing, and other movement techniques. Parkour originally originated from France in the 1980s and has become popular around the world in recent decades.” Sebastiou Santos explained about the origin of the sport. , that the practice is already recognized as a sport in many countries such as the United Kingdom.

Sebastiao Santos also thanked the other parliamentarians for their efforts in approving the law and embodied the importance of promoting another high-performance sport in the state of São Paulo. “I thank the noble colleagues who were able to look fondly at this sporting method, and to give them the opportunity to practice their exercises in appropriate and safe places; that they begin to promote the work of incentives and social integration, and to be recognized as athletes,” MP.
