In the first ten months of 2023, the differences in aircraft and passenger movements amounted to +12.8% and +19.9%, respectively.
Each plane (considering the planes that landed and took off together) was carrying, on average, about 151 passengers (144 in October 2022), at Madeira Airport, while at Porto Santo this number reached 89 passengers (83 in the same month).
In October 2023, domestic and international passenger traffic at the region’s airports recorded a positive year-on-year variation in international traffic (+14.2%) and an equally positive, but lower, expression in the domestic sector (+6.9%). . Compared to the same period before the pandemic (2019), there was growth in both sectors, meaning that international traffic grew by 54.8% and domestic traffic by 54.1%.
At Madeira Airport, international traffic dominated (54.4%) compared to local traffic (45.6% of the total). At Porto Santo Airport, there was a dominance of domestic traffic (75.5% of the total), but with less disproportionality compared to the previous September.
In this reference month, scheduled flights at the region’s airports represented 91.3% of total aircraft handled and 93.3% of passengers (92.2% and 93.6% in the same period last year, respectively).
In October 2023, the aircraft occupancy rate at the region’s airports was approximately 86.2%, with Madeira Airport reaching 86.9% and Porto Santo Airport reaching 76.1%. In the same period last year, the occupancy rate was lower, at 82.3%, 82.9%, and 73.0%, in the same order.
In the period from January to October 2023, the number of passengers who boarded and disembarked at the territory’s airports amounted to 4123.9 thousand, half of them corresponding to traffic exclusively between airports located on the national territory, which includes domestic and local flights (47.8% of the total as a whole) and air flights. Other international (52.2%). Within the latter, the United Kingdom was the country of origin and main destination for international flights from airports in the region (32.7%), followed by Germany (20.0%) and France (9.0%).
In the IATA summer, from 26 March to 28 October 2023, Madeira Airport operated commercial flights from 27 airlines (28 in IATA summer 2022), with 64 routes (60 in the same period last year) To 57 destinations (54 in IATA Summer 2022). At Porto Santo Airport, commercial flights were carried out on 7 routes (8 in IATA summer 2022), from 8 airlines (9 in the same period last year) to 7 destinations (8 in IATA summer 2022).
