The Holy See did not reveal the reason for dismissing Strickland, who had criticized Francis since 2012. “I cannot resign as Bishop of Tyler because that would mean abandoning the flock,” Strickland wrote in early September of this year. “I will respect the authority of Pope Francis if he removes me as Bishop of Tyler.” The text was released three months after Francis sent a delegation to “inspect” the place where Strickland preached the Word of God.

He replaced Francis Strickland with his ally Joe Vasquez, also a bishop. Change is extremely rare, because when there are problems, the religious in question is called upon to speak, and eventually encouraged to resign.
