Rome will have the largest urban solar farm in the world, try it!

Rome, the capital of Italy – known as the “eternal city” – is planning to build the largest urban solar farm in the world. The aim of this architectural project is to revitalize the suburban area, showing that the city is ready to face the major challenges of humanity. The international design and innovation office CRA-Carlo Ratti Associati has proposed a huge park of 150 thousand square meters, which is supposed to lead a new urban development model for the municipality. Check out more details about the project and more in the text below!

What would an urban solar farm look like?

An urban solar farm is a renewable energy project that uses solar energy technology to generate electricity in urban areas by installing solar panels on available urban structures. More compact and efficient than traditional solar farms, these farms can be integrated into the urban environment, providing additional benefits such as shade and thermal comfort in outdoor areas.

In addition to reducing reliance on non-renewable energy sources and contributing to reduced emissions, urban solar farms have economic and social benefits, such as creating local jobs and lowering the cost of electricity for local communities. However, these projects face unique challenges, such as limited available space and high cost of facilities, and need to be carefully planned and designed to ensure maximum efficiency and utilization of available space.

What does the Rome project propose?

First of all, the CRA-Carlo Ratti Associati office proposed, in partnership with sustainability and infrastructure consultants, landscape and mobility strategists, to create Tor Vergata in a densely populated peripheral neighborhood of the city, a large fair space, and reuse the old pavilions as an innovative distraction. The new solar farm would be clustered with hundreds of “solar trees,” which would open and close their panels throughout the day, harvesting energy and providing ample shade for passers-by.

This urban solar farm will have an installed capacity of 36 megawatts, making it the largest publicly available engineered system of its kind in the world. Viewed from above, this intricate energy web will look like a beautiful mosaic complementing the urban design along with themed buildings as well as other areas of the boulevard and vegetation. The project’s layout is characterized by a seamless transition to the city’s urban network, creating a cohesive link between the natural world and the man-made world, proving that there is potential for effective urban growth in combating climate change.

In short, Rome wants to reuse a huge complex – which, by the way, was designed by the exceptional architect Santiago Calatrava -, an important point of transportation and mobility links with a green corridor, archaeological sites and many monuments built in the city. It’s been abandoned for over fifteen years, and it just doesn’t make sense. Now, the government intends to implement the slogan “People, Territories, Together: Urban Renewal, Inclusion and Innovation”. I hope this will serve as an example for other urban transformations!
