New York officials said a 30-year-old man who was crossing the finish line in the Brooklyn Half Marathon collapsed and died on Saturday morning.

Fire Department spokesman Frank Dwyer said the runner, who was not identified, was taken to a nearby hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

It was not clear why the runner collapsed, though a statement from the event, New York Road Runners, said the man began feeling ill after completing the race.

“Our thoughts are with the Runner family and those close to them,” said Trina Sinjian, a spokeswoman for the nonprofit.

Singian explains that the medical team accompanied the participants throughout the race. The group also monitored the weather – a New York City weather warning warned that high temperatures and high humidity could lead to health problems.

Around noon, Brooklyn recorded a temperature of 26.7 degrees Celsius. Organizers estimate that more than 22,000 runners took part in the event, which has returned to full capacity for the first time in three years.

A spokesman for the local fire department said 15 other runners were taken to hospital, four of them with serious but not life-threatening injuries. The others were slightly injured.
