Russia on Friday recommended its citizens to avoid traveling to the United Kingdom, and announced tightening requirements for Britons to obtain a Russian visa, presenting these measures as a response to hostilities by London.

“Given the extremely hostile development of the United Kingdom against our country … we recommend Russian citizens to avoid travel to the United Kingdom,” the Russian Foreign Ministry said in a statement.

In it, she denounced the difficulties imposed on the Russians in obtaining a British entry visa, so the ministry guarantees “that it will do the same with the British, until the situation returns to normal.”

According to the same source, many Russians have complained that getting a visa to the UK has become “actually impossible”.

The UK has had a strained relationship with Russia for years, although the country – and London in particular – is a favorite destination for the Russian elite.
