Medvedev, the former Russian president and deputy security minister, said the United States was fueling russophobia in an effort to bring Russians to their knees.
Reuters – Russia warned the United States on Thursday that Moscow had the power to put the world’s largest superpower in its place. The country also accused the West of fueling a brutal anti-Russian plan to destroy Russia.
Dmitry Medvedev, who served as president from 2008 to 2012 and is now deputy secretary of Russia’s Security Council, said the United States had fueled “disgusting” fear of Russia in an effort to bring Russia to its knees.
“It will not succeed – Russia has the strength to put all our reckless enemies in their place,” Medvedev said.
Since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine on February 24, the United States and its European and Asian allies have imposed sanctions on Russian leaders, companies, and entrepreneurs, isolating Russia from much of the global economy.
President Vladimir Putin said what he calls a special military operation in Ukraine was necessary because the United States was using Ukraine to threaten Russia, and Russia had to defend itself against the Ukrainian “genocide” of Russian-speaking people.
Ukraine says it is fighting for its existence and that Putin’s allegations of genocide are absurd. The West describes claims that it wants to destroy Russia’s imagination.
Russia says that despite the sanctions, it can do well without what it sees as a disloyal and decadent West led by the United States. He says that his attempt to establish relations with the West after the fall of the Soviet Union in 1991 has ended and that he will develop relations with other powers such as China.
