Maranhão is a state of large proportions of incredible natural beauty, and part of this abundance is the fact that it belongs to the Amazon forest, about 34% of the territory, 81,208.40 km², and includes 62 municipalities, according to GOVMA data. In this scenario, it is essential for the Maranhão community to participate in discussions regarding global health and climate change issues.

As a space to exchange knowledge and promote viable solutions, the Master's Degree in Environment at CIUMA University held its first international workshop on Amazon, Environment, Health and Sustainability, between 24 and 27 April, at the Renaciencia Campus. Throughout the event, the program sought to provide an exchange of knowledge and experiences, allowing participants to understand emerging challenges from a global perspective, as well as discuss opportunities to improve the quality of life of local communities through sustainable practices and, fundamentally, foster collaborative cooperation. The event, which received financial support from CAPES, was attended by famous figures, such as Prof. Dr John Parkinson (Bangor University, Gwynedd, UK – United Kingdom) and Prof. Dr. Javad Salehi Faderdi (Clermont Graduate University, California, USA).), who also coordinated the event with Prof. Dr. Carlos Tomaz and Prof. Dr. Rita De Cascia M. de Miranda (both CEUMA).

The official opening ceremony was held by Professor. Dr. Carlos Tomaz, who stated that the workshop is a step towards expanding the internationalization of IES. “Therefore, in the opening lecture of the International Workshop on Health, Environment and Sustainability, I discussed the views that we have regarding the Brazilian Amazon, and in particular the case of the Maranhão Amazon. We also discussed the international cooperation project that we are developing, starting now with the University BangorIn the United Kingdom and with Claremont University in California, United States.

Among the officials was the head of the Scientific and Technological Research and Development Foundation of Maranhão (Fapema), Nordmann Wall, who highlighted the importance of educational environments that foster in-depth discussions on such a trendy topic.

“It is important to see such events contribute to the debate, to an in-depth discussion, so that solutions to environmental and sustainability issues can be found. Therefore, I came here feeling most comfortable, as FAPEMA, so that we can work together on many other projects, With an always open dialogue to improve further,” said FAPEMA President, Nordmann.
