Pope Francis announced Sunday, 29th, new cardinals of the Catholic Church. Among the 21 cardinals declared, there is Dom Leonardo Ulrich Steiner of Santa Catarina, Archbishop of Manaus, who was born in Forkelinha, in November 1950.
Dom Leonardo had already worked in Blumenau, where he was ordained bishop on April 16, 2005 by Cardinal Paolo Evaristo Arens, taking his episcopal motto “Verbum Caro Factum” which means “an act made of flesh”. In addition, also in 2005, he was ordained bishop by Pope John Paul II in the Prelature of São Félix do Araguaia, in Mato Grosso.
He studied philosophy and theology in Petropolis, Rio de Janeiro, from 1973 to 1978. From 1981 to 1982, he completed a pedagogy course, and from 1987 to 1994 he became a Junior Master. In 1995, monk Ulrich moved to the Pontifical Athenaeum Antonium in Rome, where he received his MA and Doctor of Philosophy degrees. He also twice held the position of General Secretary of the National Confederation of Bishops of Brazil (CNBB).
In addition to Dom Leonardo Steiner, the Brazilian Dom Paulo Cesar Costa, Archbishop of the Diocese of Brasilia, in the Federal District, was also declared Cardinal.
