The Minister of Planning, Ricardo Brandao, emphasized that the REM program is an important ally of the state administration in terms of changing social indicators: “Thanks to this partnership, the government has developed public policies committed to environmental sustainability and improving the quality of life for families, through work and income generation”.
The head of the Secretariat for the Environment and Indigenous Policy (SEMAPE), Julie Messias, spoke about the state government’s efforts to combat illegal deforestation.
“We had more than 20 days without deforestation warnings, and in May we were able to reduce deforestation by 70%. Acre has respected the forest law, and more than 90% of rural estates in CAR are registered [Cadastro Ambiental Rural] We are doing a complete job so that our rural producers act within the legality,” he said.
The Minister of Tourism and Entrepreneurship, Marcelo Messias, emphasized the importance of the REM Community Tourism programme. “With the resources that have been employed, excellent results are being achieved. In Juruá, the people of Serra do Divisor and Rio Croa benefit directly from the improvement in their incomes through the preservation of the perennial forest,” he noted.
KfW Portfolio Manager Klaus Koehnlein gave a positive description of the measures implemented by the state government with resources from the international programme.
“We have seen very good progress over the past four years. Acre State has been able to bring resources to traditional indigenous people and small farmers. We are seeing a change in the lives of these people and in the local economies which helps to preserve the forest,” he noted.
Louise Hill, Portfolio Manager for Climate Finance (REM and LEAF) at the UK Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office, confirmed the UK government’s interest in signing new projects in the region.
“We would like to remain partners with the state of Acre outside of the REM programme, which has proven to be very effective and transformative. There are other possibilities to work on, such as an international climate finance and UK partner,” he said.
