On the morning of Tuesday, the 18th, the Public Prosecutor’s Office of Goias (MPGO) launched Operation Maximum Sanction II, with the aim of obtaining new traces of the activities of a criminal organization specialized in fixing the results of professional football matches – including the Brazilian. Series A Championship: Three preventive arrest warrants are issued.

The operation was launched by the Special Working Group on Organized Crime (Gaeco) and Institutional Security and Intelligence Coordination (CSI).

According to the MP, there are suspicions that the criminal group has already played in at least five matches in the 2022 Brazilian Football League Primera División, as well as in five matches in the state championship, including Goiano, Gaucho, Mato-Grossense and Paulista. all this year.

In addition to the three pretrial detention warrants, 20 search and seizure warrants are served in 16 municipalities in six states, issued by the second state court for laws relating to crimes committed by the criminal organization and the laundering or concealment of assets, rights, and values.


Commands are carried out in Goianera (GO), São Paulo (SP), Rio de Janeiro (RJ), Recife (PE), Pelotas (RS), Santa Maria (RS), Erechim (RS), Chapecó (SC) and Tubarão ( SC), Bragança Paulista (SP), Guarulhos (SP), Santo André (SP), Santana do Parnaíba (SP), Santos (SP), Taubaté (SP), Presidente Venceslau (SP).

According to the Public Prosecutor’s Office, the procedure is a branch of the maximum penalty process, launched in February 2023, which resulted in the filing of a complaint, previously received by the judiciary, with accusations of crimes of merging a criminal organization and corruption. in sport.

In a note, the Chapecoense Football Federation also highlighted the confidence in the professional integrity of the athlete and reaffirmed its position fully against any kind of situation involving match-fixing. “The club understands that such conditions are totally unsportsmanlike, and detrimental to the moral and ethical values ​​of the method,” he said.

“With regard to the ‘maximum sanction operation’ and the implementation of the order related to it in Chapeco – involving a player from the club – the Alviverde Association has strengthened its support and, above all, confidence in the professional integrity of the athlete,” the club added.

As already established by the Public Prosecutor’s Office, the criminal group acted by selectively selecting professional footballers, offering sums from R$50,000 to R$100,000 to athletes so that they could commit certain events at the Games.

The investigation indicates that the manipulations were varied and intended, for example, to ensure that a specific player was penalized for a yellow card, red card and maximum penalty, as well as to ensure the number of corner kicks during the match and even a losing score. from a specific team in the first half.

There are indications that the previously requested behaviors of players are intended to enable investigators to make large profits on bets placed on sports house websites, as well as to use accounts registered in the name of third parties to increase profits.

According to the Member of Parliament, criminal practices may fall under the offenses provided for in Law No. 12.850/13, Articles. 41-C and 41-D of the Fan Statutes, Art. 1 of Law No. 9,613/98.

Of the prosecutors, staff and police involved in carrying out the steps, 17 were in Goiás, 79 in São Paulo, 16 in Santa Catarina, 16 in Rio Grande do Sul, 12 in Pernambuco and 4 in Rio de Janeiro.
