Rural producers in Mato Grosso do Sul receive guidance to export products such as cassava starch, tapioca, limes and guavas. The assistance is provided through the AgroBR project, an initiative promoted by the Confederation of Agriculture and Livestock of Brazil (CNA) and the Brazilian Trade and Investment Promotion Agency (Apex Brasil).
“We make a virtual portfolio for the company in five languages and offer various foreign trade training courses for free,” explains Natalia Alves, regional coordinator of the project, in a note.
According to data from the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Supply (Mapa), agribusiness in Mato Grosso do Sul, until September 2022, exported $5.98 billion. The value represents an increase of 15% compared to the same period in the previous year, which was $5.19 billion. In September, the country had a circulation of 644.3 million US dollars. an increase of 32% compared to the same month in 2021.
Mato Grosso do Sul was the second largest exporter of cassava starch in 2021. With a value of US$8.3 million, the state accounts for 32% of the total exported products. The main destinations were the United States, Paraguay, Spain, Colombia and Bolivia.
Although tapioca represents a much lower value compared to starch, the country led the exports. Shipments are worth US$1.7 million, accounting for 38% of sales. Among the product arrival points are the United States ($1.1 million), Mexico ($473 thousand) and Ecuador ($91 thousand).
According to Natalia Alves, there is great potential for lemon production and export. “Although it needs to develop its infrastructure, it is in a position to develop in this direction, especially with the increase in production of Tahitian lemons,” he says. Last year, Brazil exported 125 million US dollars.
Guava is another fruit that also has potential, notes the Confederation of Agriculture and Livestock of Brazil (CNA). In 2021, the country shipped about US$1 million in product, with the main destinations being the UK, France, Canada, the Netherlands and Portugal.
