The University of São Paulo (USP) has 11 courses selected among the top 50 courses in the world, according to the new QS World University Rankings by Subject, one of the major assessments of higher education in the world. The survey analyzed more than 1,500 institutions from 88 countries. In all, 44 districts of the University of São Paulo were ranked among the 51 regions analyzed by ranking, which was released this week.

Among the identified areas, USP entered the Top 50 in Dentistry (15th place); Metallurgy and Mining Engineering (31); Petroleum Engineering (32); geography (38); Modern Languages ​​(41); Veterinary Science (41); Anthropology (42); architecture (44); agriculture and forestry (48); Sports Science (49), being the only Brazilian to appear on this list; and sociology (49).

In 25 other specific regions, USP ranked between 51 and 100; in five areas, among the top 150; and in three regions, among the top 200. Among the criteria considered by QS to rank courses are academic and among employers’ reputation, number of citations in scholarly articles, networks of international collaborations, among others. The QS ranking is led by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), followed by Oxford (UK) in second place, Stanford (US) and Cambridge (UK) in third and Harvard (USA) in fifth.

In the general list of universities, the University of the South Pacific is ranked 121. The placement is the same as last year and the best among Brazilians. Four other public institutions appear in the top 500 list: University of Campinas (Unicamp), in 219th place; Federation of Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ), ranked 369th; Federal Federation of Sao Paulo (Unifesp), at No. 434; and the University Estadual Paulista (Unesp), at 492.
