Doing 20 minutes of daily physical activity can reduce the risk of hospitalization for various diseases, according to a study of more than 80,000 volunteers.
In order to have a healthy and long-lasting life, you must have already heard that frequent physical activities are essential, but is there a minimum daily time for these exercises? According to the researchers, the answer is yes. It takes 20 minutes every day.
In search of this answer, the scientists followed 82,000 Britons, ages 42 to 78, for an average of seven years. In this period, the hospitalization rates for various diseases and the level of physical activity practiced by the volunteers daily were analyzed.
The study that calculated the minimum daily exercise time was led by an international team of researchers, including members of the University of Oxford, UK, and the results were published on the platform. JAMA Network is open.
How much time is required for physical activity to maintain good health?
Moderate or vigorous physical activity [feita] daily for 20 minutes may be a beneficial non-pharmaceutical intervention for reducing hospitalizations for many common health conditions,” the study authors say, in the article. This strategy “could reduce hospital burden and improve quality of life” for many individuals, they add.
It should be noted that the conclusions of the study are similar to the main recommendations previously made for longevity. As recommended by the World Health Organization (WHO)Do at least 150 minutes of moderate “cardio” exercise or 75 minutes of vigorous-intensity activity per week.
What kind of exercise is good to avoid hospitalization?
As the study suggested, activities that make the heart work moderately or vigorously are necessary, such as:
- walk fast;
- Being;
- Go by bike
- Climbing stairs
- swimming.
To find out the intensity of the exercise, it helps to be aware of how difficult it is to talk while moving. When conversation is possible, the intensity level is usually mild. If a person begins to feel some difficulty, then he is in moderation. Now, if speech is really hard, it’s powerful.
Daily exercise reduces the risk of disease?
The authors detail that “the greatest reduction in risk was due to gallbladder disease, diabetes, and urinary tract infections.” However, a lower risk of hospitalization for various diseases has been observed with 20 minutes of exercise per day, as shown below:
- diabetes: 23% lower risk than those who do not engage in daily physical activity;
- Urinary tract infections (UTIs): 22.7% less risk;
- Gallbladder diseases: 19.8% less risk;
- Pneumonia: 14.1% less risk;
- Iron deficiency anemia: 9.4% less risk;
- gastroesophageal reflux 9.2% less risk;
- Diverticular disease: 8.5% less risk;
- Infectious cellulitis: 8.1% less risk;
- Colon polyps (a condition linked to bowel cancer): 3.8% less risk.
Previously, other studies indicated that frequent physical activity can improve the functioning of the immune system, in addition to strengthening the health of the lungs and heart, and reducing levels of inflammation in the body.
