The United Kingdom on Wednesday urged all G7 countries – the group of seven of the world’s most industrialized economies – to “stop using Russian oil and gas,” as London did with the United States.
“Putin must fail,” British Foreign Secretary Lis Truss declared during a visit to the United States.
“We must double our sanctions” in response to the Russian invasion of Ukraine, “he said during a visit to Washington.
According to the minister, this includes the “total” disconnection of Russian banks from Swift International.
The EU has already cut off seven Russian banks from this secure base that allows key operations.
For the same reason, the European Union does not currently want to ban Russian energy imports.
“We want to encourage a group of big countries to join us in these sanctions,” said Lis Truss, after her country and the United States banned Russia’s oil imports.
“I am convinced that Putin will fail in the end,” said Anthony Blingen.
“Russia will face a strategic defeat regardless of the short-term tactical gains in Ukraine,” he said.
Blingen said sanctions had already “ruined 30 years of progress in Russia’s integration with the rest of the world” and promised to continue “increasing pressure” on Russian President Vladimir Putin.
He called on the Kremlin to immediately allow Ukrainian citizens to safely evacuate Ukrainian cities besieged by Russian forces, accusing Moscow of “blocking” these evictions.
“The Kremlin’s proposal to build humanitarian corridors toward Russia or Belarus is absurd.
