The UK is donating 600,000 to help Madagascar after the storms

“AndThis UK support comes at a crucial time when UNICEF and its allies are on the field to help people affected by hurricanes and tropical storms. By urgently addressing the water and sanitation needs of these communities, we can prevent a worsening of the situation, “said Vicky Ford, British Foreign Secretary for Africa, citing a report by the United Nations Children’s Fund.

In that report, UNICEF recalled that Hurricane Emnati, which struck Madagascar on February 22, was the fourth severe weather event to hit the country since the beginning of this year, after Hurricane Patsirai and Dumago in early February and Hurricane Anna in January.

These extreme events have affected half a million people, widespread floods and destruction of property, schools and health centers, the UN estimates, which says it is “at the forefront of implementing key responses and providing assistance to those affected.”

Unicef’s activity in this area is related to the installation of water storage and treatment tanks, control of emergency toilets and vectors, as well as the distribution of sanitary equipment that includes solutions for water purification in homes. With eyelids, alcohol gel and hand wash equipment.

A donation of £ 500,000 (€ 600,000) from the United Kingdom to UNICEF, in addition to the same amount London made to the Red Cross earlier this month.

“This brings in £ 500,000 in British support for 1 million (€ 1.2 million), providing immediate assistance to communities affected by ground partners and helping to recover Madagascar,” Vicky Ford said.
