A 721-meter pedestrian suspension bridge opened in a mountain resort in the Czech Republic on Friday and has become the longest in the world. Until then, the largest was in Arauca, Portugal, with a length of 516 meters.

Sky Bridge 721, as it is known, is located in the northeastern part of the country, in the Kralicky Sneznik mountain range, near the Polish border and about 200 km east of Prague.

It was built at an altitude of more than 1,100 meters above sea level. It connects two mountain peaks and rises up to 95 meters above the valley below.

Offering extraordinary views to visitors who enjoy the heights, the number of people on the bridge at any one time can be as many as 500 people. However, in the first two weeks after opening, the number drops by half.

Construction took two years and cost about 200 million CZK (about 40 million Brazilian reais). The bridge will be closed for safety reasons if winds reach 135 km/h (84 mph).

Critics say the site is too large for its surroundings, while others argue that it will attract many tourists to the city of less than 500 residents.

Theo Scheppens, 59, from the Netherlands was one of the first to walk on the bridge. “Cool, impressive,” he said, “The bridge is moving, so you think something’s going to happen.”

“I wonder what will happen when it is stormy. The weather is great, we are very lucky.”
