UK at risk of gas shortages this winter
The alert was issued by the regulatory body Ofgem

The UK Energy Authority said the UK faces “significant risks” of gas shortages this winter and a potential emergency due to the conflict in Ukraine and limited supplies in Europe.

While Russia meets only about 4% of Britain’s gas needs, the disruption to supplies to Europe has contributed to British prices and made it difficult for the UK to get gas from other countries.

In a letter to energy company SSE, regulator Ofgem said the UK faces the prospect of a “gas supply emergency”, as supplies to some plants are reduced, which could prevent them from generating electricity.

In response to the publication of the letter, Ofgem said in an email: “This winter is likely to be more difficult than the previous one, due to Russia’s disruption of gas supplies to Europe. We need to be prepared for all scenarios,” adding that he is implementing emergency measures. To ensure the UK’s energy system is fully operational.

Gas plants accounted for more than 40% of UK electricity production last year, while fossil fuels are also used to heat about 80% of British homes.
