The Energy Minister has approved the Sizewell C nuclear power plant project as the UK aims to free itself from energy dependency.
The Sizewell C nuclear power plant project was approved by the British government. The project involves the construction of a new nuclear power plant that will produce reliable, low-carbon electricity. The goal is to help the country achieve carbon neutrality by 2050.
Sizewell C is an approximately £20 million project in which EDF (Électricité de France) has an 80% stake.
The nuclear project received development approval from UK Energy Minister Kwasi Quarteng.
London has prioritized the development of nuclear power to implement an independent energy strategy. However, many reactors are at the end of their lives.
The only plant currently under construction is at Hinkley Point C., led by EDP and China General Nuclear Power (CGN), whose project will begin operations in 2027.
With the military conflict between Russia and Ukraine, energy independence is one of the country’s main goals. For that reason, the UK wants to accelerate the development of nuclear energy.
The UK plans to build eight new reactors to meet 25% of electricity demand by 2050.
