The Institute for Fisheries Development (IFOP) collected samples to understand the causes of their appearance on the coast
247 A rare fish was caught off the coast of Arica, Chile, last Friday morning. This animal, called the paddlefish, does not appear much in the region and is associated with a famous Japanese legend that holds it responsible for attracting tsunamis, earthquakes, or typhoons. The report is from O Globo newspaper.
The legend resurfaced in 2011, with the tsunami on the island of Honshu, off the Pacific coast, when one of these animals reappeared years later without being seen in the area. According to the belief, the fish lived in the depths of the water near a Japanese island, and when it decided to return to the surface, it was responsible for the earthquakes, for which it was called the “messenger” of the palace of the sea god. However, science has not yet confirmed these popular beliefs.
The Institute for Fisheries Development (IFOP) collected samples to understand the reasons for their appearance on the coast. According to the institute, the presence of the animal on the Chilean coast is very unusual. The animal belongs to the class of fish with large bones and usually lives from 200 to 500 meters, but was found at an altitude of 1000 meters.
On social media, you can see pictures of long bony fish that lift their heads while fishermen carry them ashore. The length of the fish was 5.8 meters.
