The two candidates for the Conservative Party leader, Foreign Secretary Liz Truss and former Finance Minister Rishi Sunak, clashed in a televised debate over issues such as the economy or whether Boris Johnson should be hired.

Truss described the government’s decision to raise taxes before Sunak’s resignation as “shrinking”, warning that paying off debts incurred during the Covid-19 pandemic “too quickly will hurt our economy and end up causing a recession.”

Snack, who justified the tax hike on the basis of the need to fund the public health system and protect the economy during the pandemic, warned that postponing public debt payments would “pass the bill for our children and grandchildren to pay” which could lead to higher interest rates.

The new Tory leader will be announced on September 5, and the next day Boris Johnson will present his resignation to the Queen. The successor will be called to form a government without the need for legislative elections.
