US influencer goes viral after reading 'Brás Cubas': 'Nothing can compare to this' | culture

American influencer and writer Courtney Henning Novak has started a project to read books around the world called Read Around the World. Her idea is to use the alphabet to choose a country that contains the letter and read some classic works from that place.

Right at point B, the tiktok chose Brazil and went to face the classic “Memórias Póstumas de Brás Cubas” by Machado de Assis. However, the influencer says she was not prepared for what awaited her:

“Tell me, what am I going to do for the rest of my life after the book?” I still have a lot of things to read, but nothing can compare to this. “I now want to learn Portuguese, and I need to learn it,” he said.

Courtney's video has already received over 400,000 views and is among the most viewed videos on social media. The comments section is full of Brazilians praising the American action and initiative.

Even during the recording, she said that she was “angry”, because it would be impossible to find any similar book in the world. According to her, the only thing possible is to find something nearby.

“Memórias Póstumas de Brás Cubas,” published in 1880, is considered one of the greatest classics of Brazilian and Machado de Assis literature. The story revolves around Bras Cubas, a deceased man who resumes his life and some amazing events.
