9 After getting damaged by flood, man builds high barrier and saves house from flood

Worcester, an inland city in England, is often affected by flooding from the River Severn, which runs through the city. Water fills the streets and often invades houses – this happened in October and again at the beginning of the year.

Worcester resident Nick Lupton, a retired engineer, had his home flooded nine times.

In 2022, he decided to build a wall around his property to prevent flood waters from entering his home. “It's not good to have water in the walls of your house,” he says.

The project took over a year to complete and was ready by September 2023.

The first test took place the following month, in October last year. “Our house has great flood protection. The wall is there to make our lives easier,” Lupton said.

Recently there was a new flood in the area. Lupton says this time the water in the city reached a height he had never seen before. The video shows that the retaining wall prevents water from entering.

“It performed well in testing. It handled the obstacle with ease [a água]”, says the retired engineer.
