Prince Charles, 73, son of Queen Elizabeth II, was caught with his eyes closed, apparently asleep, during The celebration that turned Barbados on the Caribbean Sea into a republic.
Prince Charles’ gaffe did not go unnoticed by British newspapers. In the Daily Mail, the report highlights that the fatigue of a member of the UK royal family can be explained by the time difference. The party began around 11:30pm in Bridgetown, while the Scorpions celebrated in London at 3:30am.
Barbados has been independent since the 1960s, and still maintains Queen Elizabeth II as head of state. At the same ceremony, Rihanna was chosen as a national hero.
The change of regime, from a constitutional monarchy to a republic, ended the 396-year rule of the British Crown on the Caribbean island.
Prince Charles said during the ceremony that the declaration of the republic was a new beginning for Barbados. He declared, “Since the darkest days of our past and the horrific horrors of slavery that will forever pollute our history, the inhabitants of this island have made their way with extraordinary force.”
