Amanda Nunes and Erin Aldana will face off in the main event of UFC 289 this weekend, with the women’s bantamweight belt on the line.
Brazil’s Nunes, who also holds the featherweight belt, began her second career with the featherweight belt last year, defeating Juliana Pena and regaining the title she lost in the pair’s first encounter. The outcome of the opening bout is considered one of the biggest upsets in UFC history, and the women were set for a triple here, until Pena suffered an injury.
So Aldana is on the alert, looking for a third straight win and aiming to become the fourth Mexican champion in UFC history, along with the trio of Brandon Moreno, Alexa Grasso and Jair Rodriguez. The 35-year-old fighter faces a difficult task, with Nunes – also 35 – widely considered the greatest female fighter in MMA history.
In the co-main event, former lightweight champion Charles Oliveira faces Benil Dariush, who is looking for his first shot at the title in the category.
