Aveiro has a strong business fabric, with 43,813 companies headquartered there. That is, there are 26 companies per square kilometer. In 2019, the turnover of the companies headquartered in the city corresponds to +15 million cubic meters and the gross value added to +3.5 million cubic meters.
It is worth noting the growth of new companies in the region (5,697), with 156 new companies in the high, medium and high technology sectors, as this figure increased by 8% compared to the previous year.
The main sectors of activity in the Aveiro region Manufacturing industries (46%), wholesale and retail trade. Repair of vehicles, cars and motorcycles (32%). As for industries, we can highlight the manufacture of metal products (14%) and the manufacture of chemical products and artificial or synthetic fibers (13%) as the most important. The various concessions granted to the Aveiro region enhance its high attractiveness in terms of quality of life, tourism and an environment conducive to doing business.
Aveiro is the 7th Portuguese city with the best quality of life, ahead of Porto and Lisbon. It also presents an Environmental Quality Index of 96.2 in 2019.
The investment in the protection of the biodiversity and landscape of the municipalities of the Aveiro region was made, in 2020, in the amount of 337,000 €. The proportion of urban waste intended for reuse and recycling is 78.8%.
