MADRID, Spain (Fulhapress) – Liz Truss, 47, has served as the third Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, after fellow Conservatives Margaret Thatcher (1979-1990) and Theresa May (2016-2019), holding several positions in her party colleagues’ governments. .

With Boris Johnson (2019-2022) she was Secretary of International Trade and, since last year, has held the position of Minister of Foreign Affairs. With Theresa May (2016-2019), he chaired the Justice and Treasury portfolios. With David Cameron (2010-2016), he was in charge of Ambiente. In the latter role, Truss contradicted his predecessor by saying that he believes in climate change that scientists warn of and that humanity is also contributing to warming.

Mary Elizabeth Truss will officially take over as prime minister on Tuesday, defeating former Finance Minister Rishi Sunak, 42, a former billionaire banking executive and grandson of immigrants, by 81,326 votes to 60,399 in an Indian.

Married and a mother of two, Truss cited her parents in a television debate in July. It’s not exactly what she calls family pride: in fact, her parents were horrified when their daughter joined the Conservative Party. “I grew up in a very left-wing environment,” she told the Guardian in 2009. Truss was born in 1975 and raised in Leeds, a major industrial city in the north of England.

Priscilla Truss, the new prime minister’s mother, was part of a non-governmental organization that campaigns for the elimination of atomic bombs by the great powers. The girl even participated in anti-nuclear demonstrations in her youth, led by her mother. But a mother is a mother, and when she first ran for Parliament for the Conservative Party, Priscilla agreed to help her daughter in the election campaign.

The father, John Kenneth, a college mathematics professor, declined to participate. When a colleague of Kenneth learned of Elizabeth’s parents, he emailed, “I’ve seen your daughter become a whore,” toying with the idea that “tory” – the title of Tory in the UK – would also be an ugly swear word in writing.

Truss said of her life in Leeds: “I never met the Conservatives at school. All my teachers were Labour.” After a brief flirtation with the Liberal Democrats – the third largest political force in the UK, after the Conservatives and Labor – Truss went to Oxford University. There he studied politics, economics and philosophy, and also first met conservative students. When she did her first internship at Shell, she was already asking her superiors for leave to attend Conservative Party conventions.

During the campaign, Truss engaged in controversy by criticizing her old school in Leeds. According to her, many children there were disappointed with the poor quality of education, to which the current headmaster replied that she did not know what she was talking about. She complained: “She said at first that our school is leftist, and now she criticizes our teachers.”

Following Truss’ comments that the school was “red”, the fact emerged that the Conservative Party had already controlled Leeds’ education policy from 1955 to 1997, which includes the years I studied there.

As prime minister, Truss will face a long list of problems, which opposition lawmakers say are the result of 12 years of poor conservative rule.

During the campaign, she promised to act quickly to tackle the UK’s cost of living crisis, saying she would present a plan within a week to tackle rising energy bills and secure future fuel supplies.

It also indicated it would cancel tax increases and cut other fees, in a move some economists say will fuel inflation.

This, along with a pledge to review the BoE’s mandate while protecting its independence, has led some investors to abandon the pound and government bonds.
