But can eye exercises really eliminate the need to wear glasses? Are they effective for any other eye problems?
What do ophthalmologists say?
Many people do not know, but the eyes can also be exercised. Gymnastics is indicated in this case when there is any change in eye movement (eye movement), namely symptomatic latent strabismus, convergence insufficiency, intermittent divergence.
“Orthoptic (or eye) exercises enable and strengthen the entire sensorimotor vision process. Through movement, you can understand the external eye muscles, and through the sensory fusion, in the brain, of the images coming from each eye. There must be harmony between them, since they only fulfill their roles if they are together,” explains Andrea Pulcinelli Ferrari, orthoptist at the Centro Ophthalmológico Pacaembu, in São Paulo.
The main goal of this type of training is to enable the patient to use both points of view better, with a significant impact on his quality of life. However, it should be noted that the prescription is only made after an orthoptic assessment, ordered by the ophthalmologist, and the treatment must be closely monitored by a specialist.
“Each patient has a need and each movement has a function, so it is essential to do it correctly. The only thing to clarify is that there is no exercise to treat refractive errors, cataracts, glaucoma, macular degeneration associated with aging and other eye problems. Anyone who sells this type of solution is carrying out false advertising,” warns Harley Bicas, coordinator of guidelines and management of the Brazilian Council of Ophthalmology.
